Navigators in Europe will be able to pick up the latest GPS PDA unit offered by Mio this holiday season. The new A201 sports a 312Mhz Intel Bulverde processor and 64MB of RAM, and perhaps best of all, it improves on the old 12-channel receivers by featuring the latest 20-channel SirfStar III GPS chipset. This will aid in signal pick up and reception. Speaking of reception, somewhat unique to this device is its rotating GPS antenna. This allows the user to use the A201 in either portrait or landscape mode (with a simple push of a button) without any loss in signal strength. While the A201 does provide Bluetooth connectivity and Outlook synchronization, it is surprisingly lacking WiFi and GPRS capabilities. |

Navman has launched another portable navigation device, the Navman iCN 650; this one has a 2GB internal harddrive, I would guess microdrive; and comes pre-loaded with maps of the entire U.S. and Canada. The iCN 650 will run on SmartST Version 3 software and will have a 3D map display option that enhances the visual navigation experience on the high-resolution (320x240), TFT LCD (3.8-inch display). |

You think spies are hard to track. The most elusive spooks in the world have nothing on the snow leopard. It's one of the most reclusive animals on the planet, with its propensity to inhabit steep, rocky terrain and come out when it's dark and strike quickly before fading into the shadows once again. Yet biologists have now tagged one of the elusive cats with a GPS collar in order to track its movements. This first (although probably unwilling and certainly unknowing) volunteer was caught in Pakistan. It weighed in at 75 pounds, so some sedation was certainly involved. The scientists want to track these animals because they know so little about them. |

So much for deep dark secrets. A group of American hackers have cracked the codes that were to be used by Galileo, the European GPS network that is struggling to be completed on time and on budget. Whether this is significant in the end remains to be seen. According to a report in the most recent issue of GPS World magazine, a team from the GPS Laboratory at Cornell University used a computer algorithm to steal the codes that were keeping the orbiting satellite GIOVE-A (Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element-A) hidden from prying eyes. |

This is definitely one to follow up on. It's the IOPS in car PC from SNT Korea, and it will be on display at CeBIT. What we know so far is that it will be driven by a touchscreen LCD, the system is running Windows XP with GPS capabilities. Onboard HSDPA gives you mobile Internet, and the T-DMB support allows you to watch Live TV, which can you burn to the hard disk. You can even use this thing as a mobile office by plugging in a keyboard and mouse. |

The S1000 Autopilot by Raymarine is a truly unique item. It is designed for vessels up to 25’ in length with hydraulic steering. The S1000 comes complete with an S100 wireless control, S1000 autopilot course computer and hydraulic pump. The system has all needed parts for installation including hydraulic fluid, fittings hoses and tools. The S1000 will steer you to a waypoint that you are navigating to on your GPS or you can simply have it keep you on a compass bearing. It is also packed with features you usually only find in higher priced autopilots like fishing patterns and Raymarine SmartSteer. The S1000 will allow you to choose between automatic trolling patters like cloverleaf, figure eight and zigzag patterns. Raymarine’s SmartSteer technology ensures smooth and accurate performance by controlling rate of turn relative to vessel speed. The S100 Remote can be secured to you or the boat with the included cradle, belt clip or lanyard. No need to worry about losing the remote and not having control of the autopilot as the system will automatically return to standby mode when the remote is outside of the 10 meter range. The S100 is easy to read with a backlit high contrast display. You can also lock the keypad for safety while operating the boat. |
