The Zumo 550 is preloaded with MapSource City Navigator NT North America for extremely detailed mapping of the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The 550 also provides you with nearly 6 million points of interest (POI’s) such as, restaurants, hotels, ATMS, banks, gas stations, and much more. You can also import your own POI’s using standard CSV files. The text-to-speech feature allows you to hear the street names as you’re being directed. For instance, the Zumo 550 will tell you to “Turn right onto Christopher Dr. in 300 feet” rather than “In 300 feet turn right”, which allows you to keep your eyes focused on the road ahead. |

That is if Intel finds success in their experiment to see if Wi-Fi can help pin point a person’s location within a few metres of their location. Though the limitation is that this service would only be available in an urban environment, the benefits of cost savings by using an existing technology network cannot be ignored. Expensive satellites used for Global Positioning Systems can be eliminated by using the Wi-Fi network. The limitation of urban positioning via Wi-Fi is one of the things which is anyway difficult via GPS. Thus a combination of the two is likely to give a near perfect solution in locating people. Is someone really going to use these systems or are they likely to remain limited to the imagination of movie script writers? Well, the usage is now becoming talked about as parents have started showing keen interest in wanting to know the location of their children by dialling a number and looking up a map. There might be many more uses which might become mainstay such as defence related tracking, air travel, packages, tracking of children, old people and pets become more commonplace. |

OLATHE, Kansas -- Garmin International Inc. today unveiled the GPSMAP 60C and GPSMAP 60CS — two of the most colour-rich handheld devices enabled with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology for the outdoor recreation and marine markets. With these products, Garmin has again raised the bar of user expectations by offering a 256-colour transflective TFT display that provides great mapping visibility in almost any lighting condition. "Our 60C and 60CS deliver the kind of colour that hikers, hunters, anglers and mariners say they want in their handhelds," said Gary Kelley, Garmin’s director of marketing. "These products deliver a brilliant, sunlight-readable display and enough battery life and internal memory to help users navigate with ease — whether in town, in the woods, along the trail, on the lake or offshore." |

Nokia is the world's largest cell phone maker and for good reason. They find the emerging trends in the marketplace and jump all over them. They've got mobiles with multi-megapixel cameras, powerful media players, and now they're going to tackle the navigation market with much vigour. Nokia has just announced that they will be purchasing German firm gate5, "a leading supplier of mapping, routing and navigation software and services." Nokia is anticipating massive growth in the world of GPS navigation, especially in the handy little gadgets each and every one of us carry around on a daily basis: the ubiquitous cell phone. According to Nokia exec Anssi Vanjoki, mobile navigation "hasn't developed as fast as expected by the market", but they're more than certain that it will be a big thing in the years to come. |

Ricoh and GlobalSat have teamed up to offer a new reality in digital images. The result is a camera that can take pictures that are incredibly accurate—in more than one way.
The Ricoh Pro G3 camera sports the GlobalSat BC337, a CompactFash GPS receiver card. Together, they can create high-resolution digital images that are embedded with precise GPS coordinates. The result is a picture that shows visual and position accuracy. This kind of camera might be palatable to the average shutterbug, but it is of prime interest to businesses and governments. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has used the camera to record recent storm damage. U.S. National Park workers have used the cameras to document land growth and defilement. Engineers and farmers have used the camera in their surveying. Businesses including utility companies, inspection companies, insurance agents, realtors have found the camera useful. |

There are so many different GPS handheld navigation devices today, but most are designed for use inside the climate-controlled environment of a car or an SUV. Where's the love for all-weather motorcycle riders? Clarion has come to the rescue of everyone who likes riding on two wheels, because they've unleashed a waterproof protection kit for their DrivTrax GPS device. All you have to do is plunk the DrivTrax into this enclosure and you rest assured that it'll work through rain, sleet or snow (sort of like mail carriers). They've also provided a fat stylus that can dangle out the side, so the touchscreen interface is not being sacrificed. Better still, this enclosure is more than just a shell; it comes with an integrated speaker that gets powered through AA batteries (about 11 hours of life). |

This is one handy device, full of functionality sure to please the discriminating nav-fiend. It's the ONIX 400, a portable GPS device from Bushnell that has as its most noticeable feature is the real-time XM WX weather info. It goes without saying that XM Radio is available as well. And for those moments when you just can't live without sports stats and scores, no matter how far you are from civilization, the ONIX 400 can deliver those, too. Can stock quotes and horoscopes be far behind? |
