The Mac Tablet has arrived, only it's not from Apple. Axiotron is the provider of the ModBook, a Mac OS X-running tablet PC that sports a MacBook's power and operating system and definitely improves on Windows-running tablets. They basically convert a MacBook to act as a tablet, but its not running on Windows. Among those improvements are the to-Mac-aficionados-familiar iChat, iDVD, and other iLife applications; an optional GPS unit; Bluetooth capability; and handwriting-recognition protocols. |

I normally associate Garmin with consumer level portable GPS devices, but today's announcement is something quite a bit more substantial. The Garmin GPSMAP 5000 Series comes with a tagline that reads: High-Tech Meets High-Touch. This family of multifunction displays (MFDs) gets you a sleek, super-bright touchscreen chartplotters "that are as easy to use as they are powerful." The screens on these marine electronics are large and in charge. The flagship GPSMAP 5212, for example, comes with a huge 12.-inch XGA color touchscreen capable of a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, all while being super-bright and ultra-waterproof. Teh on-screen interface eliminates the clutter that would have been created by "hard" buttons. You'll get to view high-resolution satellite imagery, a "mariner's eye view" with a true 3D map perspective, and a "fish eye view" for "underwater 3D bathymetric contour perspective. The latter two come by way of BlueChart g2 Vision technology. |

The name of the game these days is convergence, and Magellan is hearing the message loud and clear. The six latest additions to their Triton line of portable GPS devices all receive goodies that expand beyond giving directions. You get brilliant full color touchscreens, barometers, multi-megapixel cameras, and even an LED flashlight if you find yourself on a backroad someplace. The top of the line model is the Magellan Triton 2000. It gets all of that stuff mentioned above, including a 2.0 megapixel picture taker, as well as a brilliant 2.7-inch QVGA display, SD expansion card slot, and an integrated speaker and microphone. |

I'm not really sure what's so radically new about this interface, but Mio is saying that the upcoming C620 portable GPS unit will come with funky new software that adds even more data. The in-house developed MioMap 2008 interface will be running on the C620, giving you more data, "and more dynamic data about the route ahead." We've seen three-dimensional mapping on GPS handhelds before, but Mio's latest offering will boast "a detailed representation of the map with more natural perspective and 3D style cues, including color-coded parks and major landmarks." The sample screenshot provided shows that we're in Paris, apparently, with the Eiffel Tower just on the other side of the water. |

The Zumo 450 is preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT maps with complete coverage throughout the entire United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The database allows the user to search for an address or one of nearly six million points of interest (POI’s) such as restaurants, hotels, ATMS, banks, gas stations and much more. The touchscreen display is glove-friendly making it easy to operate the unit and to plug in the destination of your choice. The Garmin 450 will then guide you to your destination with both verbal and on screen visual directions. If you deviate from the planned route the Zumo will recalculate the route and get you back on track. Whether you are riding highway or cruising the country, you can view your maps in 3D which makes it easy to see what lies ahead of you. |

The Garmin Forerunner 305 sports a sleek new design and enhanced features to bring a wealth of information to any avid runner, cyclist, tri-athlete, and/or sports enthusiast. Among the most dynamic of the features are: a lightweight, 2.5-ounce design; real-time monitors for distance, speed/avg. speed, heart rate/avg. heart rate, time, calories burned and pace/avg. pace—all of which can be easily accessed by shifting through various customizable display screens during your workout.
The data fields can also be set to auto-scroll, which allows the athlete to see all the differing data fields in sequence. The 305 model boasts quicker satellite location times than previous models and an ANT heart rate strap which wirelessly links up to the unit while effectively reducing cross-talk with other similar wireless items which may be nearby.
