Positioning Solutions, the exclusive manufacturer of Mapopolis-branded GPS systems, announced today the immediate availability of GPS navigation systems for 10 new handheld models, ranging from the Siemens SX-45, to the ViewSonic V-35 to the older Palm Vx. The systems for Pocket PC handhelds include Mapopolis Navigator which provides spoken and visual prompts before each turn and will automatically re-route you if you should miss a turn. The Palm OS systems generate turn-by-turn directions right on the Palm OS handheld and allow you to view the route-map with your GPS position overlaid. Both types of systems are able to generate coast-to-coast, door-to-door directions. |

Siemens Mobile released a bunch of phones this week despite rumours of them shutting down their phone biz. Surprisingly, each of the phones includes a built in camera with varying degrees of quality spread throughout the line, from high to mid-range. The top of the line phone, the Siemens SXG75 UTMS 3G handset is feature packed with two cameras, one for digital stills, and another for making video calls. Also included; Bluetooth, MP3 player, FM radio, Assisted GPS, and a large QVGA screen. To store your media the phone will come with 120 MB of built in memory with a RS-MMC slot to further expand the phone. The phone should hit streets in September of 2005. |

Like the i580, the i880 and i885 throw in some multimedia functionality into the mix with an integrated music player, but unlike the rubbery wonder, these new phones come with dedicated music buttons and a "push-to-open button on the hinge." They aren't quite as rugged, but they still do the popular push-to-talk (PTT) dance that everyone seems to love. |

The Koreans seem to get all the fun toys! Check out the iNavi Pro navigation device that combines all the functionality of a PDA, MP3 Player, Video Player and GPS in one device. The iNavi Pro will feature 512MB of onboard storage and an extra CompactFlash expansion slot. The processor for the device will be the Atlas-A ARM9 192MHz CPU and will run Windows CE.NET. Also included will be an agenda with various PIM functions all easily navigated via their touch screen. I would have to get my hands on the device to find out if it features are useful or if they are just junky little applications thrown on to beef up the press on the device functioning as a all-in-one solution. |

Look what we found rearing its head around the FCC offices this lovely Friday afternoon. German firm Hoft & Wessel has just got their skeye.pad XSL Tablet PC approved by the suits, and despite what your initial glance might tell you, it's not a Skype-pad (yes, you're not the only one who was fooled by the model name). Instead, this is a Windows CE.net 4.2-powered Tablet PC with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, 800 x 600 resolution, and dual stereo speakers. Naturally, it has its fair share of slots as well, including those of the CF, PC, and SD variety. They'll be offering two different models, one with an integrated WiFi module (T23002) and one that will only get WiFi-ness via the SD slot (T23000). Both should support WPA and WEP encryption. Wondering how you go about entering text? Well, there's a hidden on-screen keyboard that you can access using an icon on the taskbar. |

I'm not entirely sure if I'm reading this correctly, but it sounds like T-Mobile USA has effectively picked up the Pharos GPS Phone 600 and 600e, offering customers a $200 discount if they sign up on a new T-Mo contract. You may be able to navigate around town with these, but sadly, Catherine Zeta-Jones is not along for the ride. The Pharos GPS Phone 600 is an unlocked quad-band world phone, so it does not carry any sort of T-Mobile USA localization or custom software. Instead, you get Windows Mobile -- including pocket versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint -- as well as integrated GPS with voice-prompted directions. It comes preloaded with maps of USA and Canada, running on Ostia navigation software. In terms of entertainment, you get FM radio, Windows Media Player Mobile, and a 2MP camera. |

A Solar flare has been detected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The size of the eruption is about 10 times larger than the Earth and may result in disruption of wireless networks, GPS, and other Satellite based communications. The eruption created a geomagnetic storm that the NOAA is forecasting as G3, or "strong," on its five-level rating system. |
