Galileo To Support Global Search And Rescue
Written by Kristin
Monday, 13 August 2007
Sample ImageThe detection of emergency beacons will be greatly improved by the introduction of Europe's satellite positioning system, Galileo. The Galileo satellites will carry transponders to relay distress signals to search and rescue organisations. In connection with this, representatives of the Galileo project attended the recent 21st annual Joint Committee Meeting of COSPAS-SARSAT, the international programme for satellite-aided search and rescue.

GPS to Help the Blind Navigate
Written by Kristin
Monday, 13 August 2007
Sample Image

The European Space Agency and other organizations are testing a personal GPS-based navigation system that helps blind people get around better on their own.

The handheld device, dubbed "Tormes," was unveiled in Madrid in early June. It weighs less than one kilogram (about 2 pounds), comes with a Braille keyboard and a voice synthesizer, and taps the global positioning satellite system to provide verbal directions. Added software and a database of city maps give immediate feedback about the users' surroundings.

While the device -- which is likely to debut in 2004 -- is not intended to replace traditional tools the blind use to get around, it can help them navigate new or unfamiliar areas.

Is This the 2008 Subaru WRX?
Written by Kristin
Monday, 13 August 2007
Sample ImageForget the renderings, forget the hearsay. We've come across what we believe to be live pictures of the redesigned 2008 Subaru WRX in wagon form. The first thing that I noticed was that this AWD monster has lost the "pig nose" found on most current models, including the 2007 Impreza and Tribeca. Now it's got a "mustache." The profile of the new WRX reminds me a little of a Mazda 3, whereas the overall look has inklings of a Ford Focus hatchback and a Peugeot 206 or 207.

These pictures, taken from Motor Trend and scanned by a member of NASIOC (North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club), are not official releases from Subaru, as far as I know, but they're the closest to the "real thing" that we have seen to date. The raw features and specs have not yet been announced, but we clearly see a GPS navigation-like display inside, as well as a fairly beefy turbo. But where are the fender flares?

Polymer Vision concept screen rolls up
Written by Kristin
Monday, 13 August 2007
Sample ImageHow do you pack a significantly bigger screen onto a phone or PDA without making the thing the size of a phonebook? If Polymer Vision can turn their concept into reality you’ll just roll it out.

The company has created a completely flexible, rollable screen. When it is rolled up it is just 7.5 mm thick, but it rolls out to make a screen of 4.8-inches. At this point the resolution isn’t as good as you would get on a smaller screen, just 240 x 320, but there are a lot of circumstances where I would happily trade sharpness in picture for something I can look at without squinting.

Polymer Vision is looking at all sorts of applications for the screen. Everything from phones to PDAs and GPS could benefit from having a much bigger screen that doesn’t add any more bulk to the device. You could even have two screens – a small one for quick viewing and a larger one you roll out for extended use. It’s just a concept, but it opens some exciting possibilities.

Becker Traffic Assist Pro gets dressed up in Ferrari red
Written by Kristin
Monday, 13 August 2007
Sample ImagePeople like Ferrari-branded items, especially when they come clad in that signature red. At least, that's what Becker is hoping. The new Traffic Assist Pro is a blazing new GPS unit, sporting a 4-inch 65k color touchscreen display, 64MB of internal memory, integrated 2W speakers, and some sort of memory card expansion. In fact, they're tossing in a 2 gig card that will come preloaded with Navteq maps for 37 European countries.

Powered by a SiRFstar III chipset and 400MHz processor, the Ferrari-hot navigator will not only keep you on track, but also keep you entertained with its built-in MP3/WMA player. Battery life has been rated at 4.5 hours of navigation.

Nokia 330: A handheld tablet PC with multimedia tendencies
Written by Kristin
Monday, 13 August 2007
Sample ImageLove the idea of an internet tablet, but a little turned off by the size of the Nokia 770? The Finnish phone maker has heard your call and is releasing the more compact Nokia 330. This smaller rendition is more geared toward multimedia with its support for DivX movies, MP3 music, photo viewing and so forth. The screen is 3.5-incher, attempting to find that healthy medium between being pocketable and being big enough to actually see. No official word yet, but we also hear that the 330 will also rock GPS. Sweet.

Top tech to make you a real spy
Written by Kristin

Sample ImageEye Ball R1 – It’s a camera and recorder which is encased in a rubber and polyurethane ball about the size of a baseball and weighing less than a pound. You can throw it into a room that you need to keep an eye on. When it comes to a rest it will start recording the sights and sounds of the area within 25 meters of it, and it will send the images to a handheld unit up to 200 yards away.

I have this fantasy about playing catch with James Bond with one of these things outside of the bad guy’s headquarters. The ball goes over the fence ‘accidentally’, and we catch them in the act of trying to destroy the world. We foil their dastardly plot, of course.
