A while ago we had talked about Humminbird 997c. That was 2007. Today we have a more advanced version of it called Humminbird 997c SI. Humminbird 997c SI – to be exact – is actually a Combo NVB Color Fish Finder and GPS Chartplotter, pre-loaded with Navionics Gold and Hotmaps.

News came out on wired.com just recently about Sprint sharing customer locations with law enforcement. Before you worry and throw your Pre in the ocean here are the situations where Sprint may ‘ping’ your phone for GPS data:

However not for end consumer just yet – only for government, energy, utility, transportation and maritime users. Nissan is going to offer factory installed GPS navigation systems in their vehicles for a reasonable price. As you know GPS navigation is an add-on for most other car makers that usually tag about $2000 to the price of the vehicle. Since you can get a more capable portable GPS navigation system for less than $300 the navigation package always looked like a rip-off.

US Army with its behemoth spending budget is now looking to drop about $5 million dollars on GPS guided mortars to kill more efficiently. The high tech mortars are needed to fight in Afghanistan where targeting people along mountain ridgelines and other high positions is apparently an issue.

JVC and Kenwood had their own GPS navigation systems available, but apparently this one, JVC MDV-313, is a collaboration between the two.
